Abstract

The essay compared and contrasted the counterinsurgency operations (COINS) in the Philippines and Iraq. It identify the critical factors that led to the successes and failures in each operation. The United States military launch two successful campaigns that led to the defect of the "known" enemy. Each campaign developed into where insurgents and loyal supports of the overthrown government engaged in small-scale guerilla warfare against the United States forces. The United States counter them by utilizing unconventional war tactics. By adapting battlefield changes they were able to keep their tactical strategies relevant and timely, this enhanced their chance of success. Unconventional warfare strategies utilized diplomatic and humanitarian efforts to sway support of the locals' population. By doing so the United States military was able to train the anti-insurgency forces to take back the control of their countries and allowed the United States to reduce their military role.

Outnumbered five to one, the United States (U.S.) Army over one-hundred years ago defeated an insurgency in the Philippines, this defeat made the Philippine War "one of the most successful counterinsurgencies waged by the U.S. Army in modern times (Boot, 2002)". With striking similarities to the Philippine War the U.S. Military encountered counterinsurgency in Iraq. With swift military action the U.S forces in both campaigns were able to defeat a hostile government removing them from power; they were able to train the anti-insurgency to defend their country reducing the U.S. military role, thus giving back the indigenous people back their country in a better state.
