Our social world

Our beliefs, values and attitudes effect the way that we view our world, and interpret everything around us (Myers, 2008). This paper will look at this writer's employment within the prison system and how it relates with my social world and social psychology through the perception, judgment, explaining and expectations of the social world.

The social world that this writer interacts with would be that of employment within the prison system. As medical personnel, we are required to respond to any medical emergency within the prison grounds. These emergencies range from anything from a minor cut, to a full code having to perform C.P.R. Although we are always accompanied by guards while out in the prison grounds, there are many times when we are called out after a gang fight and the gang enemies are still within the same area as the patient.

Times like this are the hardest, with the guards trying to control the crowd situation, and still protect the medical personnel while we attend to the injured. Times that we are unable to save the patients are the hardest to accept.

We mentally construct events based on our beliefs and expectations. We can benefit from our preconceptions, but there are times were we become entrapped by our thought patterns. For example; this writer works in a prison, when people hear that I work there they assume the worse possible situations. Many have asked how I could work in such a dangerous job, when in reality I am in a very safe environment. Working with the medical crew, the inmates with us no harm as we...
