Overcoming Obstacles

"One who gains strength by overcoming obstacles, possesses the only strength which can overcome adversity".� To me, this means that the only way to conquer a personal loss is by overcoming obstacles in order to gain strength. The death of my grandpa was the biggest obstacle I have had to endure so far in my life. He passed away in the hospital from Lung cancer. My grandpa and grandma lived with my family. Hence, he was really close to me. Overcoming his death took a lot of courage. I managed to overcome the pain due to my understanding, support from my family and my memories.

It was a warm July evening. My dad was at work and my brother and sister were at a friend's place. My mom got a call from my dad saying that my grandpa didn't have much time left in this world.

Even before my mom had told me the truth, I knew. A couple of minutes before we arrived at hospital, my grandpa had passed away. I knew that I would have to get through this day one way or another. But the fact, I knew prepared me for this tragedy. My knowledge of the final outcome about my grandpa's death, gave me a chance to spend as much time possible with him. Moreover, I know I did my best to save him. My grandpa quit smoking three years before his death. This is because my family and I constantly nagged him to stop smoking, and so he did. Unfortunately, smoking still came back to haunt him even three years after he quit. "Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding."� This means that only where there is pain is there understanding. I now...
