Pencils of Promise: Education for All

If somebody walked up to you today and asked what you want most in the world, chances are that you would probably answer with something outlandish and materialistic in nature, such as a new car, a million dollars, a mansion, the latest smartphone, or a new video game console. You wouldn't ask for a pencil, right? You have a ton of pencils! You can easily buy an entire pack of 20 for a dollar at Wal-Mart. Well, believe it or not, "a pencil" is precisely the answer a young Indian boy begging in the streets gave when he was asked that question (Chang, De Jesus). In other parts of the world, to somebody who longs for access to an education, something as simple as a pencil is more than just a writing utensil: it's a key to unlocking a better future. Pencils of Promise should be supported because everybody in the world deserves the opportunity to get a quality education, they help create futures for the children they help, and they have several programs in place to better the living conditions of the communities they work in.

Pencils of Promise is a non-profit organization that was founded in October of 2008 by one Adam Braun. He was backpacking around the world and visited dozens of countries, trying to find his own purpose in life. While talking with the various people he met during his travels, he realized that so many of them went without an education for reasons ranging from lack of properly-trained teachers to the fact that the need to work in order to support the family was higher on the list of priorities than taking time out of the day to attend school, so he decided to take matters into...
