Introduction:With today's workforce becoming increasingly diverse and organizations doing more to maximize the benefits of the employees, organizations are relying on managers to get the people who get the job done, and of course, make the company money. An organization's success increasingly depends on the knowledge, skills, and abilities of its employees, particularly as they help establish a set of core competencies which distinguish an organization from its competitors. When employees' talents are valuable, rare, and difficult to Imitate, an organization can achieve a sustainable competitive advantage. In order sustain this advantage and "compete through people" an organization has to be able to cleverly manage its workforce.

Conducting an appraisal helps evaluate the performance of employees in an organization. It forms the basis of several staff decisions including dispensing bonuses, giving promotions, and designing an effective compensation mechanism. Appraisals also help in the identification of training needs for the employees or certain problem areas that need to be improved.

Bearing in mind the importance of this tool, we are going to design a "performance appraisal system and pay system" for cooks and another for servers in a catering business in a college town, in order to ensure that they are motivated to prepare high-quality imaginative dishes, work well with each other and are polite to customers on location.

Performance appraisal system for cooks, servers and 360° analysisTo develop an effective system, we followed these steps:1.Chose a mix of formal and informal appraisal techniques.

2.Chose what factors to evaluate, traits, behaviors or results.

3.Chose the right method of appraisal. Graphic, rating scales, BOS.

4.Chose who appraises the performance.
