Personal Definition Essay

This whole weekend I kept thinking of a word to choose for this essay but I just couldn't connect myself to any one term, but then I suddenly thought of the perfect word: DANCE. You can look anywhere, and in a dictionary the word Dance means "To move one's feet or body, or both, rhythmically in a pattern of steps, especially to the accompaniment of music", but to me dance is more than moving your body, to me dance means family, discipline, pain, hard-work, and an escape.

Ever since I could remember I have always danced, and I believe a part (if not all) of it was thanks to my family. I come from a Hispanic/Latino culture and I remember every time there was a family celebration, there would always be this crazy loud music and somebody dancing to it, no matter if it was country, hip-hop, old-school, or cumbias.

At the end of every quinceanera (a Mexican celebration where a female celebrates her 15th birthday), it is tradition to dance until the party is officially over. Each family member always looks forward to this part because it a way of getting my family to bond and to have an amazing time, even if it's only for a few hours. So as you can see, dancing has always been a huge part of the culture that I was raised in. I also dance competitively and it has taught me about discipline and along with that, respect. I have learned to follow the rules and if by any chance I didn't, there would always be consequences. I've learned to respect authority figures, even if they're the ones who are wrong and times when we've had a difference of opinions. Looking back on those situations now, I realize...
