In the early 1900's, the United States experienced problems at the social, political, economic, and environmental level. The social problems came from drinking. The political problems stemmed from the political machines. The economy suffered because of the power that corporations had and of unemployment. The environment was in danger because of impure food and water. The progressives fixed these problems in a number of ways.

One of the social problems the progressives fixed was drinking. At that time, when people drank, they became violent and caused problems for the people around them. Some alcoholics would use their hard earned money to buy liquor. So because of these people, their families couldn't eat. The political machines were the political problems. The political machines would promise the immigrants a place to live or a job if they voted for them. They would tell people that they would build parks, schools, sewers, roads, and orphanages.

The good thing about them was that they kept their promises. The bad thing about them was that they were illegal and they ran false elections.

The economy suffered because of the power that big corporations had. The corporations would take control of the other companies so people would only buy what they need from that corporation. The economy also suffered because of unemployment. Some of the immigrants couldn't get jobs because a lot of people were prejudiced against them. The environment was in danger because of impure food and water. Some meatpacking industries would have bugs or mice in the food. If the meat would fall on the floor, they would still package it and ship it.

The way that the progressives fixed the social problem was by passing a prohibition law. It stated that no one is allowed to sell alcohol or drink it. But people...
