The psalms are poetry intended to be set to music and prayer intended to be prayed in worship. In ancient Israel, music and poetry were the means by which the people expressed the deepest emotions of their hearts. Through joy and tragedy, faith and failure, people sang and spoke to God through the Psalm

The primary purpose for the psalms is to be a vehicle for the expression of God's people in worship. The psalms represent the response of an individual or nation to the person and work of God, which results from reflection upon His program for His people. The psalms were written in recognition of God's gracious works in history and were then used to respond to God in worship.
