Policies for a drug-free workplace are important to have in place in any organization. Substance abuse programs can reduce the cost of decreased productivity and increase in health claims. Having a drug-free policy lowers absenteeism, mistakes at work, injuries on the job, and other related problems. In order to have an effective program there are many approaches. Each substance abuse program should be tailored to meet the needs of the individual company. There are five main components for a well place program. These components are: A written policy statement, proper supervisor training, employee education and awareness, Employee Assistance Programs, and drug and alcohol testing.

"Almost 60% of the economic costs associated with alcohol abuse and alcoholism are directly or indirectly related to reduce productivity and lost employment. Absenteeism among alcoholics or problem drinkers is 3.8 to 8.3 times greater than normal. Nonalcoholic members of alcoholics' families use ten times as much sick leave.

Up to 40% of industrial fatalities and 47% of industrial injuries can be linked to alcohol consumption and alcoholism (Carroll, 2000, pp. 92)."Tegrant Corporation has an extensive and well planned program for substance abuse in the workplace. Tegrant Corporation considers its employees the most valuable aspect of their organization. All health and safety issues that affect their employees are of utmost concern. In order to protect their employees they have set up a drug-free policy which includes Pre-Employment testing and is conducted within 48 business hours of receiving an offer of employment at the cost to the organization. Any applicant who has been offered work, but does not pass the initial drug test will not be hired, and his or her name and test results will be kept in a confidential folder.
