1. Introduction

With the advancement of information system and information technology, more and more people are able to access the Internet. Shanghai, as China's economic center, has more than 40 per cent of its total population who are using Internet as of the end of 2009 (CNNIC 2009). This means Internet has become more and more popularized among citizens of Shanghai. While people are talking about the convenience and advantages of the Internet, there is growing concern with regard to the side effect of Internet use or problematic use of Internet and whether such use can lead to an addiction (Young 1996).

In psychological field, Internet addiction is a term which has been used to explain uncontrollable and damaging use of the Internet (Stanton 2002).

Some literatures have revealed that the problem of Internet addiction can be widely seen among students of Shanghai and is predicted to be deteriorating all the time. For example, one recent study conducted by The Computer World indicates that there are currently 7.9 per cent of Shanghai undergraduates who are identified as excessive Internet users (The Computer World 2010). Some researchers have investigated such issue in Shanghai, but very few of them have conducted appropriate researches which focus on finding out the predictors of Internet addiction.
