Rhetorical Analysis

Generally speaking, after you graduate from high school the next step is college. People say that if you don't go to college, then you will not be successful. Pharinet is an anonymous college professor, who wrote the essay Is College for Everyone? Her essay appeared in an AssociatedContent.com blog. She has a strong opinion when it comes to people thinking that college is a must.

The purpose of her writing is to refute those who say college is needed to be successful. Also, she makes it very clear that college is not for everyone. Pharinet states in her essay, "Higher education is not the key to happiness and success for every person. Many people have found happiness in careers that do not require a college education." (681). For example, Steve Jobs went to college for one semester and decided he didn't need college to create Apple.

Steve Job's net worth is worth billions of dollars. This is a perfect example of a successful career that didn't require a college degree.

The audience intended for this essay is primarily for people who are considering going to college. Those who are thinking about going to college are worried that they may not be financially or academically ready. However, they go to college anyway because that's what their parents told them to do. "There are too many students enrolled in school who simply don't belong there. Though drop-out rates vary, it is estimated that in the U.S., approximately 50% of students who begin college never graduate." (680). The parents of the students who are considering furthering their education are also an intended audience.
