Football is a dangerous sport; some people would say too dangerous. Brutal tackles and collisions make playing the sport a serious health hazard. Despite safety equipment and rules, players are still grievously injured almost every game in both the regular season and the playoffs. "The path to Super Bowl XLIV is strewn with the broken bodies and damaged brains that result when highly motivated, superbly conditioned athletes collide violently in pursuit of glory" (Gregory). This means that football is a very physical sport where players are prone to serious injuries such as concussions, or minor injuries (Cluett). Thus, it is important to continue improving football safety equipment and rules because injuries can be very severe. In this paper, football is "a game in which two opposing teams of 11 players each defend goals at the opposite ends of a field having goal posts at each end, with points being scored chiefly by carrying the ball across the opponent's goal line and by place-kicking or drop-kicking the ball over the crossbar between the opponent's goal posts" (football).

This sport has a large amount of physicality, and this makes it easy to become injured. An injury refers to "harm or damage that is done or sustained" (Injury). For example in football a player may sustain a concussion or he may sprain his leg. A rule refers to "a principle or regulation governing conduct, action, procedure, arrangement, etc." Football has a very complicated rule set that is used to direct play as well as protect players. Severe is defined as "grave or critical" (severe). Severe injuries in football include concussions, torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), or in rare cases paralysis.
