Saint Katharine Drexel was born in Philadelphia in 1858 into a very wealthy family. She grew up without a care about money, yet she dedicated her love for the love god and to take care of the poor. She took and avid interest in the material and spiritual well being of black and native Americans. In 1891 she founded the sisters of the Blessed Sacrament whom together founded numerous school and missions throughout the west and south of the United States. Today the sisters of the Blessed Sacrament have missions in 11 states and Haiti.

Saint Katharine was an active member in administrator of her order well into her 70's until she became ill and was forced into a more subtle life. The next 20 years of her life she spent in prayer and reflection. Her body is now entombed at the Saint Katharine shrine in Bensalem, Pennsylvania.

All the dorms at LaSalle University are named after saints and after reading about Saint Katharine Drexel it is obvious why she is considered a saint and why LaSalle name one of the dorms after her. She not only did a lot for catholic community but helped shape the city of Philadelphia.
