For quite some time the elementary schools of District #831 have started at 9:15 a.m. and the Jr. and Senior High schools have started at 7:40 a.m. Teenagers have been complaining about this early start time for quite a while. The big problem with the early start time is the lack of sleep the students have. Sleep Deprivation can cause low test scores, tardiness, truancies, and sleeping in class. It's not just involving school grades, but it can also cause students to have depressive feelings, erratic sleep behaviors, and daytime sleeping. In our proposal we will show statistics and tell facts about how the early start time does effect the students.

Background The Forest Lake Senior High school currently starts at 7:40 a.m. and the Jr. High school starts at 7:45 a.m. I am sure we can all agree that, that is way too early for teenagers to wake up in the morning and go to school.

Students have busy lives. They wake up around 6:00 a.m. (give or take an hour), go to school until 2:10 p.m., then have after school activities until 4:30 - 5:00, and finally go home or for some, go to work.

Teenagers are running on an average of around 5 ½ hours of sleep (give or take an hour). According to the CAREI (Center for Applied Research and Educational Improvement) the average teenager should obtain 7 hours of sleep to be able to process the information they gather at school properly. We are proposing that the elementary students should start at 7:45 a.m. and the Jr. High and Senior High students should start at 9:15 a.m. Basically switch the two schools starting times. Doing so will allow the teenagers to get the sleep their bodies need without interfering with transportation situations.
