! So, everyones had the chance to bake those lovely breakfast muffins… but wait, after you eat them, have you ever wondered where they end up?!! Let's start basic - What is the digestive system?! The digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract which runs from the mouth all the way to the anus. The Gastrointestinal Tract is made up of many different organs; the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, the rectum, and the anus.!! The Oral Cavity & Salivary Glands! is the beginning of the digestive process and is where the teeth break food into smaller particles during mastication. This is a form of mechanical digestion, which is when food is digested by movement rather than reaction with chemicals. In this video, biting is indicated by cutting the food with a knife. Salivary glands located near the oral cavity secrete saliva, which begins chemical digestion (in the video, it is represented by the blue liquid). Chemical Digestion is the breaking down of food in the mouth, stomach, and intestines with the aid of acids and enzymes. ! Why do we chew? By chewing, we are able to maximise the surface area of the food, allowing enzymes in the saliva to break down the food at its maximum efficiency. This is indicated by t he mortar and pestle that represent teeth breaking down the food.!! The Soft Palate & Ep iglottis are two very important parts of the digestive system.! The soft palate blocks the upper pharynx to prevent food from entering the nasal cavity. The epiglottis prevents food entry into the respiratory system. The soft palate and the tongue (represented by the plastic spoon in this video) help push the food into the pharynx which is also known...
