"Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd is set in 1964 in a town called Tiburon, South Carolina. The narrator, Lily Owens, lives in Tiburon with her dad T-ray. Lily tries to cope with the death of her mother, Deborah Owens. Deborah was accidentally by Lily when she was only 4 years old. Her father, T-Ray, treats Lily like crap. Lily has a stand in mother named Rosaleen Daise. Rosaleen gets sent to jail for spitting snuff on the shoe of a white man. She gets beat by them which admitted her to the hospital. Lily sneaked in the hospital and sneaks out Rosaleen. They began their journey to Tiburon because on the back of Deborah's Black Virgin Mary, the town Tiburon, S.C . is engraved on the back. Lily wants to go there to find out more about her mother. So she takes Rosaleen along with her and they travel to Tiburon by foot.

They finally arrive in Tiburon and meet the Boatwright sisters. While in Tiburon, Lily meets a black boy named Zach Taylor. Zach is a hard working high school student and he also works in the Boatwrights' apiary bee hive operation in order to pay his way thru college. He wants to grow up to become a lawyer. Zach gets arrested because one of his friends throws a bottle at a white man and he didn't tell which one did it. Lily falls head over heels for Zach after two weeks working with him. Turns out that August already knew Lily's mother and tells Lily to forgive her mother. T-Ray finds out that Lily ran away to Tiburon at the Boatwrights. He pounds on the door in a pissed off mood. By the way, T-Ray found out where Lily was by calling...
