Tim Johnson

Tim Johnson is a senator in the 108th congress. He started his political career in 1978, when he was elected into the South Dakota House of Representatives as a democrat, a very important position. He was re elected in 1980 for another two year term. In 1982, he became a State senator. He served one more term from 1984-1986. In 1986, he decided to go to Washington, to bring South Dakota's interests to the capital. He was elected into the United States House of Representatives. He served for 10 years until 1996, when he finally ran for senator, and was elected in into the 108th congress, and was re elected in 2002, for his term which will be ending in 2009.

As a senator, Tim Johnson tries best to represent the interests of his home state. He is a liberal leaning populist, which means he believes that standards of morality and safety should be enforced by the government, and that a good society is achieved by the government redistributing wealth, and that the government is responsible for deciding which programs are best for society, and how much should be spent on each program.

He opposes issues such as abortion, gun ownership, immigration, and enforcing drug laws more strictly. He supports forcing companies to hire more women and minorities, the death penalty, giving more federal funding for health coverage, and expanding free trade.

Tim Johnson is a very active member of the United States Senate. He is on many senate subcommittees. He is on the Subcommittee for Agriculture Rural Development and Related Services, the subcommittee on foreign operations, he is the chairman of the subcommittee on financial institutions, the subcommittee on the budget, several subcommittees on energy and natural resources, and the subcommittee on Indian affairs.
