To be an effective servant leader, is to model Christ to those who you are leading. It is to want to serve God in a genuine way that flows from the heart. The servant leader must first have a natural desire to serve, and then leadership follows after. Sometimes there may be days that they don't feel like doing it but they never give up and continue to fulfill the role that God has called them to do.

"The test of servant leaderships is:do those served grow as persons; do they, while being served, becomehealthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves tobecome servants? And what is the effect on the least privileged personin society; will she or he benefit, or at least, not be further deprived?No one will be knowingly hurt, directly or indirectly" (Greenleaf,1998, p.123).

Within this essay I will describe and evaluate the essential qualities of servant leadership.

I will then introduce you to Margaret Mahy who has displayed many qualities of a servant leader. I will discuss how servant leadership was manifested in her life. I will then look at how I might implement servant leadership while working with staff, whanau and children in a centre. Miller & Stall (2004) stated "It's a special person who will rearrange his or her calendar for the chance to make a eternal difference in kid's lives" (p.147).

Leaders exercise servant leadership when they move outside their planned schedule or normal activity to face up to a special challenge. Jesus gave us the great example of servant leadership in John 13:17. The foot washer, who would normally wash the feet, hadn't shown up, and the disciples didn't volunteer to do it.
