Premenstrual syndrome or PMS is the variation of physical and mood symptoms that appear during the last one or two weeks of the menstrual cycle and disappear by the end of the full flow the period. Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder or PMDD is a specific set of mood symptoms that are also present the week before the period and lessen a few days after the start of the period. It also interferes with societal functioning and other responsibilities. Most doctors and professionals believe that PMS and PMDD are basically the same thing, except that PMDD is more severe, because of its interference with daily activities. Up to 80% of women have recurring symptoms associated with their periods, and about 3-5% have symptoms so severe that it interferes with their usual activities, such as work, school, or even relationships.

PMS has more physical symptoms such as bloating, weight gain, breast tenderness, swelling of hands and feet, aches and pains, poor concentration, sleep disturbance, appetite change, and a feeling of mental discomfort.

PMDD has symptoms such as a depressed mood, anxiety or tension, irritability, decreased interest in usual activities, concentration difficulties, noticeable lack of energy, noticeable change in appetite, overeating or food cravings, sleepiness or insomnia, and feeling overwhelmed. PMS and PMDD can also be confused with depression, generalized anxiety, panic disorder, and even bipolar illness because of such similar symptoms. The medical disorders it can be confused with are anemia, autoimmune disorders, hypothyroidism, diabetes, seizure disorders, endometriosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and collagen vascular disease.
