Should Abortion Be Legal? There are more than 1,500,000 abortions performed each year in the United States.(Bowan) Chances are most people know someone who has had one or have had one themselves. Even though abortions are legal now, many people are fighting to change that. Abortion, the termination of pregnancy before birth, results in the death of a fetus. A few abortions can occur naturally because a fetus does not develop normally, or because the mother has an injury or disorder that prevents her from carrying out the pregnancy to full term. This type of spontaneous abortion is usually known as a miscarriage. The other type of abortion is called induced abortions. These are abortions that were performed because the pregnancy is unwanted, or because it presents a risk to the women's health. Although abortion is a very controversial issue in America that affects many women medically, ethically, and legally, I think it should be illegal except under very special circumstances.

The safest method of induced abortions is usually determined by the age of the fetus, which is calculated from the begging of the mother's last menstrual period. A pregnancy is divided into three stages called trimesters. The first trimester consists of the first fourteen weeks of the pregnancy. The second one consists of the fourteenth week until the twenty-fourth week of pregnancy. The final trimester is from the twenty-fifth week until the baby is born. Induced Nelson 3 abortions in the first trimester are easier, safer, and less expensive then abortions in the second or third trimesters. In the last two trimesters, there are more complicated procedures that pose greater risk to the mother's health. Some women may even risk death.
