Is it possible for a countries number one cash crop to be illegal? The answer is simply yes. In the United States of America marijuana took over corn as our countries number one cash crop and it's very illegal. Marijuana is by no means a new drug it has been around for a very long time. It has been around since the days of colonial America when Washington and Jefferson grew hemp. It wasn't until the 1930's that the government really became interested in this very questionable plant called marijuana. The government began researching this peculiar plant and decided that it wasn't appropriate for people to be smoking it. This new idea of thinking by the government brought about the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937. This was by no means the end of the drug. Twenty some years later in the 1960's and 1970's marijuana was back. These two decades are often associated with hippies, music, and drugs (mainly marijuana).

But just as fast as the drug came back the government tried to stop it dead in its tracks in the 1980's and 1990's. The penalty for this drug became harsher and harsher mainly due to the "war on drugs". But this war was the governments way of looking out for the people of this country so it was a good thing. Since that is there job to look out for us or is it? Many people think it should be up to them what they do to there bodies. But there is always the matter of other people's safety to be concerned about. So is it possible for people to do what they want to there own bodies and still be safe enough for the people around them? Should marijuana be legalized in the United States?
