Learning Teams as a Social GroupA social group is defined as two or more people who identify and interact with one another. For the purpose of this paper, I will examine the first learning team that I was a member of at Jackson State Community College Fall semester 2008. This was my first social group as of moving here to Jackson, Tennessee. The group consisted of five members and the role of this team was to help each other overcome the fear of public speaking and work together as a team in doing so. The social function throughout the course was to build self confidence and a sense of satisfaction of our speech. There are 3 classifications of social groups -primary, secondary and referential. These groups help our society learn from each other.

This learning team would be considered a primary group. According to Schaefer (2005), a primary group is a small group characterized by intimate, face-to-face association and cooperation (Schaefer, 2005).

This learning group had a huge impact on me personally. When I first started the course, I was terrified. I had a big fear of speaking in front of a group of people. The learning group helped me get through that. Our first class assignment was a small presentation we had to create. Each group member was to explain a different stage a successful marketing plan we put together. When it was my turn, I froze even though we practiced and practiced. I still stuttered through the presentation and forgot the important issues I needed to address.
