Social Groups and Organizations

Social organization is defined as" the structure of social relations within a group, usually the relations between its subgroups and institutions" (Dictionary.com Unabridged, n.d.). Common examples of social organizations may include families, governments, education, and religions. Across the world, an abundance of social organizations and groups are formed and come in all shapes and sizes. For example, one can view his or her own extended family as a social organization. I have extended family in Texas and visit them frequently. My family in Texas consists of many cousins. Another example of a social organization can be school. I am currently a student at The University of Phoenix and interact with my classmates on a daily basis. This paper will discuss the various social organizations I have belonged to over the course of my lifetime.

I will go over 3 main organizations that I was involved in; Girl Scouts of America, Toastmasters, and finally of being a college student.

Girl Scouts of America

The role of Girls Scouts of America is "dedicated solely to girls where in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world" (Girl Scouts of the United States of America [GSUSA], 2008). The Girl Scouts of America teaches girls morals and traits that girls will use through their lifetime including leadership, values, social conscience, conviction, and self worth. Girl Scouts of America was in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low. I began my Girl Scout career at the very young age of 5, as what was known as a Bluebird.
