What Society Expects of its Criminal Justice System

Society expects a Criminal Justice System that has been put in place to preserve peace and ensure safety, prevent crime and enforce the laws that have been created by our government. As a society we also expect the Criminal Justice System to punish those who do not abide by those laws and then rehabilitate those individuals until they conform to the standards set forth by the law. The goals of the individuals employed by the Criminal Justice System are to not only meet the standards of society, but also exceed them for the quality of life and safety of the people in their communities. The individuals who are charged by the system expect fair treatment from the arrest through the rehabilitation process.

Those who have developed the Criminal Justice System over the last few hundred years have had common goals for the good of the society. I believe the main goal is deterrence; through deterrence the prevention of crime is possible which will directly influence the peace and safety throughout the community. As a society we expect the Criminal Justice System to be a fair system that affords everyone the opportunity to be heard, tried and punished if necessary. The expectations that have been set forth for the various levels of law enforcement are very similar, in the most basic form I believe the expectations are "To Protect and Serve". The caveats that are added to that slogan are where law enforcement is viewed as successful or not. We expect law enforcement officials to be unbiased, fair and consistent with enforcing the laws.
