Many songs, like poetry, contain both enjoyable and unpleasant experiences. "You Were Meant for Me" by Jewel is an extremely vivid and emotional song that utilizes many poetic techniques to tell about an unpleasant experience. The lyrics contain setting, imagery, and structure, all which reinforce its similarities to poetry. These elements also help bring out the pain and loneliness that is portrayed in this song.

The first technique that this song utilizes is setting. Setting is defined as the time and place in which the events of a poem or story occur. It is told in the first person. The content of the song contains lamentation, by telling a story about a woman who is now living her life without her love. It is obvious that the woman in the song is experiencing heartbreak over a failed relationship. This is a time in her life in which she is dealing with immense pain and uncertainty.

It is 6:00 in the morning, and there are explicit details of her robotic morning routine (everything from making breakfast to reading the paper.) Eventually night comes, and again her routine is fully described. The entire narrative takes place in her new residence, minus a trip out to the movies. The solitude and desolation she feels is all consuming. The setting exemplifies the mundane nature of her actions and the loneliness of her home. This all contributes to the overall understanding of the lyrics.

The next poetic technique that grabs one's attention and interest is the image that the lyrics present. Imagery is the use of language to represent actions, feelings, thoughts and any sensory experience. The imagery in this song helps tell a story about a woman who is dealing with heartbreak and is trying to go about her normal daily activities.
