When you go to the movie theater, the last thing you see before the movie starts is a short film with a reminder to turn off your cell phones, keyed with the famous words "Silence is Golden". This was never heard of ten to fifteen years ago. Cell phone usage is on such a rise that the theater industry had been forced to create these skits so movie-goers can enjoy their time spent at the theater. According to the CTIA Wireless Association, a staggering 250 million Americans belong to some sort of cellular phone plan, up from a mere 1 million back in 1987 (Stevens, 2007). Cellular technology is one of the greatest inventions of the 21st century.

Cell phones have become popular in the U.S.

over the last 20 years or so, mainly because the convenience of communication that they offer. People can get in touch with each other from anywhere. For example, if someone is stuck in traffic and going to be late to work, they can call their employer and let them know in advance that they are going to be late. Or how about the family who is driving across the country on a vacation? What if their car breaks down? With a cell phone, they are able to call for help immediately without having to wait for someone to find them. Twenty years ago, this was not an option. Most people today do not leave their homes without their cell phones.
