Executive Summary

ACME Systems is a leading global technology company, operating in over 30 countries on 6 continents. The Group provides solutions and services that optimise and manage the performance of IT infrastructures to enable businesses to build a competitive advantage (ACME Systems Australia).

The Application Integration (AI) line of business is a major part of the ACME Systems strategy for IT solutions. The primary focus of the AI team is to develop a roadmap for our clients that provides a methodology and toolkit for identifying, structuring, and building successful solutions.

The technology boom helped the AI team soar to massive heights in profitability and revenue, even though there were major weaknesses in methodologies and management. The past year has seen some major restructuring within the AI team which was deemed necessary to sustain the business. These effects of these changes have now been stabilised and it appears that staff morale and productivity have risen to industry benchmarks.

The aim of this report is to outline the steps involved in enhancing the current development and delivery processes using Total Quality Management (TQM) principles. It targets the budgeting and quotation module used during project initiation and highlights areas where TQM can be used successfully and also its major limitations.

Introduction

The AI team specialises in large-scale, fixed-time, fixed-price custom software development projects. They are proud of, and are unique at, delivering software projects on time and on budget. Their mature project management and software development processes, which are all ISO 9001 certified, attracts government and public sector clientele. The projects which ACME Systems undertake last from 6 months ($0.5million) to 3 years ($10million), and the tendering process can require up to a year to complete.
