Personality characteristics may predispose individuals to experience excessive stress or they may protect against stress. In addition, personality characteristics can help to determine the course that are already in stressful situation. Thus, they may intensify the stress responses or act as a buffer during stressful situations. Personality characteristics can affect how we interpret situations. According to Friedman and Rosen man, two cardiologists, who noticed a style of behavior (Type A) that is associated with heart disease. Two major characteristics of Type A behavior are hostility and time urgency. The characteristic of individuals with Type A behaviors are that they are easily angered and this anger can lead to cynicism, sarcasm, intimidation and aggressive behaviors. In addition, there is a chronic sense of time urgency. They are usually impatient and rushed. They have a hurried lifestyle. They tend to be polyphasic which means they do more than one thing at the same time.

They tend to be manipulative at times and number oriented. For example- they may judge themselves with others based on how much money they make. Type a behavior pattern can be found with people in any aspect of life. It could be in their workplace, at home, at personal level too. Workplace stress levels are becoming an increasing concern these days. It is predicted that there is a positive relationship between type a behavior, personal achievement strivings and perceived stress (Individual contributory factors in teacher stress: The role of achievement striving and occupational commitment.
