Unfolding Nine Mornings

Christmas is fast approaching. Miskin asa ka motan-aw, makit-an nato ang mga symbols ug rituals na makit-an lang kung Christmas. Halimbawa ani kay mga parol, Christmas trees, Christmas decorations ug Christmas lights. Apan ang pinaka popular sa ato kay ang ritual o tradition na Misa de Gallo. "Starting December 16, for nine consecutive mornings, dawn masses are offered. They are called Misa de Gallo or gift masses" (Pineda, 2005, p. 98). According to Alejandro and Chorengel (1998), " No country, other than the Philippines, can boast of a nine-day novena of masses at the crack of dawn, providing a beautiful prelude to the birth of the Child Redeemer"(p. 32). Sa walay pagduha-duha, ang misa de Gallo kay usa na gayud ka tradisyon sa mga Filipino Catholics. Nag-ugat kini sa mga kastila na nag-introduce kanato sa Christianity dinhi sa Pilipinas ug nagpatuloy na ginahimo handtod karon kada Disyembre.

Ingon pa gayud nila:

The practice of dawn mases began sometime in the 1700s when a Spanish friar gathered his flock of farmers, at the time of harvest (which coincides with Christmas). He told them that it was time to thank God for their munificent fortune so that in the following years, God will continue to bless them with more bountiful harvests. (p. 32)

Mao kini nagapatunay na dugay na gayud ginahimo sa mga Pilipino ang Misa de Gallo. Gikan pa kani sa panahon sa mga kastilakung asa usa ka pari ang nag-introduce. Tungod kay sanay na ang mga farmers na momata ug sayo sa buntag sa pag-alay sauna sa sa ilang mga bathala , mao ningsunod sila sa giingon sa pari (p. 32).
