Assignment one

The year 2007, became what is known as a historical land mark, it is the year by which the majority of the worlds population went from living in rural areas to living in urban areas. The urban changes and movement of urban dwellers in the last 50 years has caused the rural population of the world to relocate, thus causing cities to reach sizes that are historically unprecedented. Urban changes however are still taking place, and large cities in developed countries are growing rapidly. The United Nations estimates that all world wide growth will be in urban areas in 2030�. The essence of this essay is to analyse and explain why large cities in developed countries are growing rapidly. The primary goal of the essay is to explain the pattern by which the urban growth occurs. In order to understand the changes and the rapid urban growth of cities, we need to know the process by which urbanization began, in that respect this essay will explain the process by which urbanization and urban growth occurred.

To conclude why large cities are currently growing rapidly, we'll outline the major effects of growth in terms of land price and the urban location of people and activities.

The Urbanization Process:

The idea of cities according to John Palan (2008) is relatively a new one, based on archaeological research; the human species have been around for several million years. Despite the length of our existence, for the most part we have lived in a world with out cities.
