Volleyball was invented in 1895 in Holyoke, Massachusetts. William G. Morgan, a YMCA physical education director, created volleyball. The game took some of its characteristics from tennis and handball. Volleyball was first called Mintonette and was then replaced with Volleyball in 1896. Canada was the first "foreign" country to adopt volleyball in 1900. Volleyball became part of the program of the NCAA, the body that overseas college and university sports in the USA. In 1918, the number of players per team was set at six. The official birthday of volleyball in Russia was July 28, 1923. Volleyball became 100 years old in 1995. Now there are more than 46 million Americans who play volleyball. There are 800 millions players worldwide who play volleyball at least once a week. Volleyball is a team sport played by two teams on a court divided by a net. Its gaining popularity worldwide, behind only soccer amoung participation sports.

The object of the game is for each team to send the ball regularly over the net to get into the court. The ball is put into play by the right back-row player who serves the pall by hitting it over the net into opponent's court. A team is allowed to hit the ball three times to make it in the opponent's court. A player is not allowed to hit the ball two times in a row.

The team who is winning a rally scores a point and when the receiving team wins a rally they gain the point,the right to serve and the players rotate once clockwise.
