II Company Environment A) Article I: Wal-Mart and Home Depot increase Profits Source: New York Times Despite the slower economic growth in U.S., Wal-Mart stores report that its earnings rose in the second quarter. Wal-Mart?s president and Chief Executive Lee Scott said in recorded call to investors: We expect an earnings growth in the second half will show improvement over the first half of this year but the growth will not meet our original goal.

According to Mr. Lee Scott the company earnings goal will not be met because the employee salaries, medical care, utilities charges and insurance costs had risen. As a hall, retail sales edged up 0.2 last month while they were unchanged during two month June and July. Wal-Mart the world biggest retailer reported that net income edged up more than 1 percent. Analyst expected the company base in Bentonville, Ark., to earn between 36 cents and 39 cents a share, because Wal-Mart sales rose 14.5 percent.
