Riordan Manufacturing is a plastics parts provider with a global presence that is seeking to match their computer network operating systems needs with a more recent technology. Currently, the company is running Windows 2000 server to support the network and is seeking to evaluate three versions of the Windows operating system: Windows XP Professional, Windows 2003 server, and finally, Windows Vista. Features and benefits of each operating system will be reviewed along with any known disadvantages the three operating systems may have. The discussion will began with a review of Windows XP Professional and then move on to a review of Windows 2003 Server. A comparison of Windows XP and Windows 2003 will follow. Features and benefits of Windows Vista will also be covered including a discussion regarding how Vista compares with the other operating systems.

Microsoft's Windows XP Professional was designed for all businesses, also for users who desired to have an operating system with optimum performance. Although home users have the option to purchase Windows XP Home, users can also purchase Windows XP Professional and get the same experience that businesses receive. "Windows XP Professional integrates the strengths of Windows 2000 Professional-standards-based security, manageability, and reliability-with the best business features of Windows 98 and Windows Me-Plug and Play, simplified user interface, and innovative support services-to create the best desktop operating system for business."(Microsoft TechNet, 2003)

Windows XP Pro was built on a similar structure of Windows 2000. Listed below in Table 1 are some of the features and benefits of Windows XP Professional.
