Like other students, my feelings on the issue of parents working vs parents
staying home, are mixed. While I understand the financial reality of having to
work, I think if at all possible, both parents shouldn't work full time. For
me personally, this was resolved by my working part-time. I was fortunate to
be in the position of being able to work part-time and I was lucky enough to
have a job that offered the flexility I needed as far as my children. I
believe this was also healthy for me because I wasn't at home all the time,
which would have driven me crazy.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, "some people still think that
a 'good mother' is one who gives up work to stay home with her children.
However, there is not scientific evdience that says children are harmed when
their mothers work." The article further states that what is important in the
child's development is the whether or not there is stress in the family, how
the family feels about the mom's job, and if the child has a good caregiver.
Also stated, "a child who is emotionally well adjusted, well loved, and well
cared for will thrive regardless of whether the mother works outside the home."
