  • Should have done more research

The author of this paper holds to many ideas not rooted in fact. The equivalent to the word "witch" has a negative conotation in every language in every culture on earth. This includes non-Christian cultures and even Pagan cultures. Witch burnings still occur even today in Hindu dominated India, and have nothing to do with Christian beliefs. Wicca, despite the witch-ful thinking of Wiccans, has nothing to do with ancient witchcraft. Wicca wasn't even created until 1954! Consult Triumph of The Moon by Ronald Hutton, Crafting The Art of Magic by Adian Kelly, Goddess Unmasked by Philip Davis, The Encyclopedia of Witchcraft and Demonology by R.H. Robbins for more details. Also, some parts of this essay simply make no sense. Example: "The words "Wicca" and "Wiccan" are relatively well defined at this time, such terms as Satanism, Paganism and Witchcraft." Huh????If 38 people found this article somehow helpful, it's not hard to believe the American Educational system is in bad shape. Only two sources were cited, and both of them were urls. religious tolerance.org is run by wiccans and atheists and has a definite anti-Christian bias. It's about like going to David Duke fr information on race relations. usminc.org is a more level headed view on witchcraft, wicca, and such topics even if it is a Christian website.

  • The Myth of Matriarchal Prehistory

Read The Myth of Matriarchal Prehistory: Why An Invented Past Will Not Give Women a Future by Cynthia Eller. Eller completely and thoroughly demolished the matriarchy myth (she wasn't the first). Eller has shown that wishful thinking played the biggest part of the "discovery" of this mythical matriarchy. For instance, pottery images of spirals don't denote a goddess anymore than a square design does. The images of nude women found at Catal Hyuk appear to be really nothing more than "caveman porn". The miniature booby "venus" statues were found in garbage dumps...hardly a place you'd expect to fins sacred images. Read the book for all the details.

  • Biased

Extremely biased against Christians. Claiming religious conservatism causes parents to abuse second only to alcoholism is absolutely ridiculous, as well as prejudiced. It's like saying black people are more likely to steal, Jews are more likely to be stingy, etc., Pedophiles seek out places they can be close to children, just as the numerous cases of teachers in public schools that make the headlines illustrate. If we flowed the logic of this essay, we would have to conclude somehow Education creates pedophiles.

This article was spot on. I can't understand why anyone gave it a negative or neutral rating. I guess the people who left neutral or negative ratings were disappointed there wasn't any mention of Wicca or other such rubbish (Wicca wasn't invented until 1950 and isn't Cetic. Read Triumph of the Moon by Ronald Hutton before you dispute this). It would have been great if some references could have been cited.

  • A bit on the Racist side?

There's one sentence that stands out "Though he was dead in body, he still lives on in spirit, for after his death Lee's nation, the white south, needed him not as a human but instead as the quintessential of what Virginia was made of." The WHITE South??? It sounds to me like the author might have some racist tendencies. Furthermore, the essay spent time on immaterial things, such as details about a statue. After the Civil War, Lee was attending an Episcopal Church where a freed Negro was in the service. The whites in the congregation were remaining in their seats, refusing to have participate during the communion. Lee, however, went up, got the wafer and the wine after the Negro gentleman. After that, the rest of the congregation got up and received communion. This incident shows Lee wasn't a racist, and it should have been included in the essay.
