  • WOW!

Wow, this, written for 1st grade? Unbelievable! Bravo! For someone of that age attempting to read Hemingway's novels...:) Reading is one of the best ways to enrich lives! I must say, I would be impressed by this essay if it were written by a 9th or 10th grader! Good job, and keep up the good work!

  • A very Interesting take on the Novel!

Very, very interesting. I must say, among other things, dystopic literature didn't come into my mind for the Scarlet Letter until now. Your analysis was good, and yet, perhaps you could also mention some of the aspects of the novel, like love, Chillingworth, Dimsdale, Pearl, and the inner strength of women. For example, inconsistencies within the novel include the influence of the "devil," and how Chillingworth, once a respectable man, becomes transformed. There is a whole world of examples illustrating the potential dystopia in Hawthorne's novel. Overall, good. (89)

  • :)

Great analysis of rain in this Hemingway novel. You touched upon the key subjects and the importance of rain as symbolism for death. As a fellow student who did a report on three of Hemingway's novels, I must comment this excellent essay on one aspect of A Farewell to Arms. (I hope more people can see the value in this essay!) • Good analysis, but...

I must say, you hit the important aspect, Jake Barnes is the Hemingway Hero of the novel, but not a complete one. However, how you arrived at that conclusion is only partially correct. Jake Barnes is the Hemingway Hero precisely because he was rendered impotent in a war accident. The whole idea of the Hemingway Hero is, as you aptly put, to struggle with death and life. Hemingway believed that life was a constant struggle, and how an individual reacted to that struggle makes that individual a hero or not. Jake was rendered impotent, but had met Lady Ashley. They are really very much in love with each other, and yet their relationship cannot be as Brett refuses to have a relationship with someone impotent. Thus the struggle of Jake and Ashley, a love that cannot be. How Jake takes this struggle, with dignity and stoic, render him a Hemingway Hero. However, as you put correctly, because of Jakes betrayal to his friend Montoya, setting up Brett and Pedro, he is not a complete hero, illustrating the idea of disillusionment and the "Lost Generation." Overall, good essay, though perhaps quoting the novel and a more in depth read could achieve a more accurate picture! (83)

  • Too simplified?

:) It's a bit unfair, but I have recently read Hemingway's novels, and I must say, for an 11th grade essay, this is too simple an analysis. All that was here was a simple analysis, and some parts were inaccurate at that. By simply saying that it is one of your favorite books, you certainly didn't do much to prove it. It was 84 days without a fish. Santiago was the name of the fisherman. He is a Hemingway Hero (a big part of Hemingway's novels), and in the end, he is defeated. He doesn't kill all the sharks, many, but the sharks ended up taking all of the marlin, leaving nothing but the skeleton. Santiago returns in a sense, broken, and a more detailed analysis of this novel would make for a better report. Despite the seemingly short size of the novel, Hemingway puts a lot of information, symbolism, and description into the novel, making it one of his finest works. (65~70) Keep trying!

  • Nice Essay

This is a very detailed essay analyzing the Roman army. There is a good organizational structure with topic sentences and concluding sentences that allow the reader to follow. However, some paragraphs are a little long and could be split...:) The only other thing really is that the title is a bit vague. You might also want to put some of your own analysis on your sources, particularly Ibid, or Butterfield. You used to many strings of quotes, which you might combine and paraphrase. All in all, a very detailed analysis and logical. I have learned something :)

  • Not bad

Overall a decent essay. It could use some solid examples demonstrating each type of conflict resolution ideas. Some grammatical errors here and there, and the connection between the types of conflict resolution techniques and conflict resolution today (2nd and 3rd paragraph) could be better. But focuses well, and potentially helpful...:) (85?)
