How did the British role in the Sykes­Picot Agreement of 1916 impact Palestinians search for an

independent Arab state?

A. Plan of Investigation

This investigation will address how significantly the Sykes­Picot Agreement of 1916 impacted

Palestinians quest for an independent Arab state. To explore the secret agreement on impacting

nationalism, events before, during, and after the agreement are analyzed. Arab­British negotiations and

relations are investigated through the McMahon­Hussein Correspondence, British actions in the

agreement, and the immediate aftermath with the Balfour Declaration. The scope of this research is

1914 through 1917. Letters, journals, historian's analyses and perspectives of Palestinian and British

government officials will be used to analyze how significantly Arab nationalism was affected by British

actions in the Sykes­Picot agreement. Sources, The Question of Palestine, British­Jewish­Arab

Relations: 1914­1918, by Isaiah Friedman, and Jonathan Schneer's The Balfour Declaration: The

Origins of the Arab­Israeli Conflict, provide significant evidence, and are evaluated for origin,

purpose, values, and limitations.

Leading up to the European control in the Middle East, Arab Provinces were restive towards

the Sultan in Constantinople. When the war struck in 1914 Turkish leaders suppressed Arab revolts 1
