Jesus taught his Disciples the word of God by telling stories much like in today's education. Using parables gives a greater understanding of the lesson being taught if it is related to our everyday life. Even Jesus understood the importance of integrated learning.
The parable of the sowing of the seeds describe how each person accepts the word of God into his heart. The sower is Jesus Christ, and seed is the word of God. The throwing of the seed represents God's word is for all people, good and evil alike.
Jesus said to his disciples "A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them.
The birds represent the devil snatching the word and hardened the heart to the word of God.

The seed that falls on rocky soil is the person who hears the word of God, receives it, but is quickly tempted by the devil, has no roots to sustain his beliefs, and quickly turns away from the gospel.
When my children were small they wanted to grow pumpkins for Halloween. I went out and purchased seed, soil, and pots for them to start and tend the seeds. They were diligent about watering the plants for about a week, by this time the seeds had sprouted and there was a little pumpkin plant growing.
