Do We Really Have the Right to Bear Arms?

Running Head: GUN CONTROL

Introduction

Violent crime is commonly believed to be growing out of control. The police and legal system are unable to handle the large numbers of criminals. Our streets have become a battleground where people are robbed, beaten and killed at gunpoint. We can't ignore the damage that criminals are doing to our country and our lives. I feel that people have associated the problem with one of the tools used to create it. Does the second amendment make firearm ownership legal in this country? Many argue that the second amendment only grants the military of a state to be armed while gun owners believe that the second amendment gives them the right to keep and bear arms. The common idea is that if we outlawed guns the amount of violent crime would be reduced and we would all be safer.

Anti gun activists have come up with virtually every kind of control to limit gun owners from purchasing guns and ammunition. For example, a bullet tax in California sponsored by Democratic Senator Don Perata, would have taxed every bullet sold in California (Gottleib, 2002). This was voted out in November of 2002 from the ballot in California and if passed, it would have been a constitutional amendment. Gun fingerprinting is another way of controlling gun owners' actions. This was a hot topic in California and is currently being used in New York. If this law were to be passed nationally it would mean that every gun in the U.S. would be shot into a controlled tank to produce a bullet with the markings of the barrel, which are then put into a...
