"Everybody has his own world", they say. It is nonsense. The world stays
the same. It is how you look at it that makes the difference. It is just like
looking through glasses of your ideas, habits and values. Everybody has
such a pair of glasses. They have been created since you were born and,
believe it or not, they were not created by you. It is OTHER PEOPLE who
have made them. No matter if you love those people, hate them or don.t
know them personally. It is enough to come in touch with their ideas.
However, I do not think it is fate that has influenced the course of my
life. I believe it has been my pair of "glasses": my ideas, habits and values.
Because if my values were different, they would give my life a different
course, too. Well, and if it is the pair of "glasses", through which I see
the world, that has influenced the course of my life the most, it is also
the people who have created my "glasses".
As everyone, I have been
influenced by lots of people. And who are the most important of them?
First of all are my parents. They have known and loved me since the
beginning of my existence and they were the first ones to shape my
'glasses' through education. That is why my values are similar to their
values and my 'glasses' similar to their 'glasses', especially my Mum.s.
But there are also differences in our 'glasses' and that is why there can
be friction between us. Sometimes she accepts my ideas, too, although
she thinks something different. But most times she wants me to see
things in the same way as she sees them. That is what I do not like about
her, but such behavior just belongs to us humans: Everybody, or almost
everybody thinks that his glasses are the best and, of course, we want
only the best for the people we love. Luckily, people do not let themselves
be influenced by things they don't want. If everyone thought the same
about everything, our life would be pretty boring!
Next it is my friends who have influenced my 'glasses' which have
influenced the course of my life the most. For when you like someone,
you are more likely to accept his ideas and values than when you do not
like someone. And when you hate someone, you want your ideas to
become the opposite of what he thinks. For example, it is hard to say,
"Yes, you are right," I think the same thing to people you do not like, is
it not? Another good example: my class teacher. She might be a very
good teacher but she is a very bad psychologist. She keeps telling us what
we should be like and she keeps criticizing our way of life all time! She
just wants our .glasses. to become a copy of her .glasses., because she
thinks that nobody.s glasses are perfect but God.s and hers. She does not
understand that when she tells us a thousand times "be like this" it
sounds like "be like me", and the effect will be just the opposite . no one
will want to be like this. But when I see one of my friends being friendly,
helpful, patient or nice, I try to do the same. Well I hope I am a good
example for someone, too! As I have said, it is not necessary to know
someone personally to be influenced by him. That is my experience. I am
talking about Jesus, a man who has changed lives of billions of people
although he lived only 33 years. And even if I never knew him, because
I did not live two thousand years ago, sometimes I feel like I know him
very well. I am not such a good Christian as I wish to be but it really was
Jesus Christ who gave my life a new course.
The last and, I think, not the least important thing is a thing that
influences our lives and their courses every day. You can agree or disagree
with it, but you cannot ignore it. For it is a part of the 20th century.
I mean the mass media. I think they influence us, and me too, more than
we think. You know which: fliers, headlines, Internet, advertisements,
campaigns. The changes happen so fast that we might not notice them.
I for myself am not able to tell you an example of how mass media has
influenced my life but I am sure it has, not the most, but certainly not
the least. But the sad truth is that mass media seldom shows both sides
of the truth. It is mostly only one side, the one they like the most. And
then we are ready to believe that Persil is the best washing powder, that
Greenpeace can save us, or that lady Di was a saint. It is not the best you
can do when you believe them. People know this, but mass media still
influences the lives of all of us.
There are more and more things I could write about but you wanted me
to mention only the ones that have influenced me the most. I think it is
these four which have influenced the .glasses. which have influenced
me. And although you might think I am too young to advise you, you
should think about this:
TAKE CARE ABOUT WHOSE GLASSES YOU LET CREATE YOUR GLASSES!
