Independent Film Study: 2001 A Space Odyssey

2001 A Space Odyssey is a movie about the evolution if mankind and how it pushed forward by monoliths. Yes, I know this sounds weird, but this is a very weird movie. It starts off at the Dawn of Man in which we follow two groups of early man-like creatures. They fight for territory as most early creatures would. A large black monolith is discovered by one of the groups, this seems to click something in their mind which enables them to learn how to use bones as weapons. This helps them take their territory back from the other tribe and start eating meat from the animals they killed. This starts the movie, which then goes to "present day" and shows how humans are trying to figure out what these monoliths are and where they came from. There is a monolith on the moon which is dug out, when it is discovered it was emitting a radio signal aimed at Jupiter.

Wanting to find out where this leads, humans send a team of five people and one computer. This starts the odyssey from the moon to Jupiter.

This movie is mainly part of the science fiction genre. The first movie that is classified as science fiction is "Le Voyage dans la Lune" created by Georges Melies. These types of movies have changed throughout history in many ways. They have always dreamed of an aspect of the future that we eventually made into reality. They sometimes show a different way for humanity's existence to pan out differently.
