The army is a great organization, but some people have a different opinion. I've been in the army for 17 years and though I haven't enjoyed every minute of it, I wouldn't change it for anything else. The people who serve in the army are very unique. They endure things most people would rather not and do it for reasons others can't understand. Some do it for the love of their country while others do it for the glory. For me, I do it for the love of Joe (the American soldier). The American soldier comes from every corner of the country, and every Joe has a different back round. Some come from violent places, while others have never even seen a violent act. Nevertheless, there is one thing they all have in common; they have all witnessed things they would rather forget, and come home with experiences that will be with them for the rest of their lives.

For me the day that will be with me forever started off pretty good but quickly changed. It was almost 6:00 pm which was the time I had to report for duty at the battalion headquarters. As I left my air conditioned tent and stepped into the Afghanistan desert, I was hit by a wave of unbearable heat. (The sun was burning so hot, I felt like a chicken in the oven...simile). The sun was setting, and the sky seemed to turn into a cesspool of bright colors. (There were (red) beams of light bouncing off the dark clouds like a pinball). There were also (orange and yellow) rays of light. These colors of light seemed to cut thru the clouds in a way that reminded me of punching holes thru a piece of construction paper, which formed a design, and...
