Alexander The Great

Alexander became a new king of Macedonia on an unsteady throne able to conquer the Persian Empire, and was one of the greatest military geniuses this world has ever seen. He ventured farther and won more battles than any conqueror before him. He is forever known as Alexander the Great (Greece page 192).

Alexander was born in 356 BC in Pella, capital of Macedonia. His father was Philip II. Philip was the brother of King Perdiccas of Macedonia. Alexander's mother's name was Olympias, daughter of King Neoptolemus I of Epirus. Alexander had one younger sister named Cleopatra (Encarta pg. 1).

The people of Macedonia were a semi-Greek culture. They spoke Greek but they spoke it badly. They did not do what normal Greeks did. The Macedonians were very violent and invaded other lands a lot. They didn't do ships like the other Greeks but they looked and acted Greek.

Before Philip became king, he found a deposit of silver and becomes tremendously rich. He became so rich he was able to educate Macedonia with schools. Philip also invented the phalanx. This was a very effective battle strategy that nobody else knew of. (Capen pg. 1)

In 359 BC, when Alexander was 3, King Perdiccas died. His young son Amyntas was supposed to take the throne but Philip overthrew his nephew and made himself King Philip II. Philip began to show he was a strong ruler instantly, and in a few decades he conquered most of Greece (Alexander pg. 1).

Unfavorably for Alexander and Cleopatra, their parents hated each other a lot. Philip had other less important wives and children that Olympias treated with great enmity, all which was normal at that time. When one of Philip's other wives gave birth to a retarded child named Philip...
