Abstract

This paper examines the elements and effects of the ethics issue resolution process at XYZ, Incorporated (XYZ). Observations will be made on how XYZ applies the six ethical decision-making steps; issue clarification, stakeholder analysis, value identification, issue resolution, addressing objections and resolution implementation to examine Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPPA) noncompliance complaints. When an employee violate HIPAA he or she can face serious ramifications up to an including termination of employment along jail time.

Organizational Ethics Issue Resolution

The pharmaceutical industry is undergoing fundamental changes. One of the ongoing challenges for both individuals and providers is defeating the rising cost of pharmaceutical drugs. The cost spending on prescription drugs rose at double digits in the United States over the past decade. "Traditional fee-for-services (FFS) health insurance did not offer prescription drug coverage; now, mainly has a result of managed care and effective drugs, such coverage is the norm" (Burton, Randel, Titlow, Emanuel, 2001).

Even without governmental changes, a restructuring of the pharmaceutical industry is taking place. The needs of the company, the welfare of employees and stakeholders requires that decisions are made in the most ethical manner possible. Six primary steps need to be applied when making ethical decisions: issue clarification, stakeholder analysis, values identification, issue resolution, addressing objections, and resolution implementation. By implementing a structured six step decision-making process XYZ will promote ethical standards of practice, therefore, stakeholders, clients, and employees will remain happy while the organization remains profitable and in compliance.
