To His Coy Mistress and I Wanna Be Yours

I am comparing the two poems 'To His Coy Mistress' by Andrew Marvell in 1621-1678 and 'I wanna be yours.' By John Cooper Clark. There are many similarities in these two poems, the main one is the fact that both the writers are writing to a woman describing his love for her. The topics within the poems I shall cover are; the content and ideas, Voice tone and mood, the imagery, the vocabulary and words, finally the structure.

The first section of the poems I'm going to cover is about the content and ideas and the voice tone and mood. In 'To His Coy Mistress' the ideas are put to the woman much more forcefully, you can see this especially well towards the end of the poem, where as in 'I Wanna Be Yours' its put to the woman in a more gentle and polite way,

"Let me be your vacuum cleaner"

Shows that he wants to be part of her everyday life, and doesn't just want to take advantage of her.

But his use of improper language turns it in to a bit of a joke, it seams to be written as a kind of rap, it think this because of what is said on line 27

"Deep deep deep deep de deep deep".

Also it's not really very romantic; I don't think some woman would want to here some man going:

"If you like your coffee hot

Let me be your coffee pot"

I think they would think he's making fun of them. 'To His Coy Mistress' is much more dignified although it does seam forceful. The tone in the poem is fairly formal, but still a bit cocky. But it can also e seen in other...
