1. List and give a detailed example of each of Tulving's categories of long term memory.
Endel Tulving contended that long term memory should be divided into separate memory systems. Semantic memory, episodic memory, and procedural memory.
Semantic memory is much like a dictionary or encyclopedia, filled with general facts and information. A example being when you hear the words George Washington, you think of all sorts of additional information from your long term memory, such as 1776, the first president, "father of our country"Ã¯Â¿Â½, etc. This type of information is stored in the semantic memory.
Episodic memory. If semantic memory is like an encyclopedia or a dictionary than episodic memory is like a diary, even though it may not include events that we did not participate in but that are important to us. Episodic memory lets you go back in time toa childhood birthday party, to the day you got your drivers license, to the story of how tour parents met.
Procedural memory, the most recent of the three systems has also been proposed. It refers to our ability to learn skills, complex perceptual- motor tasks, and habits. Riding a bicycle, driving a car, swimming, playing a musical instrument, and typing are all examples of procedural memory. This type of memory usually consists of precise sequence of coordinated movements that are often difficult to describe in words. While repetition, and in some cases extended practice, are required to master such skills, once learned they are rarely lost.
2. What is the difference between implicit and explicit memory? Give a detailed example of how each is used.
Explicit memory are the things that you intended to remember, at least at one time. Implicit memories are the things that are unintentionally remembered.
