REASEARCH METHODS IN NURSING ASSIGNMENT 1

RESEARCH APPROACH

1. A statement of the study problem, purpose, and specific aims.

Problem

Nausea and vomiting is a significant problem, which apparently affects seventy percent of pregnant women (O'Brien). Even though psychological factors may play a part in severity and duration (Abraham,S.), no support has been found for the theory that it is a psychosomatic condition, but rather a complex interaction of biological, psychological and sociocultural factors (Simpson, S. et al.).Management of nausea and vomiting is part of good antenatal care, but how can we improve our practice to reduce these uncomfortable, if not life threatening, symptoms in our patients?

Can specific antenatal counselling (offering education, information regarding treatments and services) and reassurance decrease the level of nausea and vomiting experienced by those women affected?

Purpose

The purpose of the proposed study is to examine the relationship between the nature of antenatal support and the severity of nausea and vomiting experienced by pregnant women.

(NVP)

Aim

The aim of the study is to identify links between antenatal support and the reduction of the intensity of NVP.

2. The Research Question

What is the relationship between antenatal counselling and the perceived intensity of nausea and vomiting in pregnant women?

3. The Significance of the Research

In the abstract of her study, O'Brien states that the woman's experience of nausea and vomiting should be further studied. She states that "continuous measures should be employed to evaluate the efficacy of specific interventions and the relationship between NVP and other variables."

As the exact cause of this phenomenon is not fully understood, there cannot be a specific panacea administered to all patients who suffer that will give instant relief. By examining the specific ways by which nurses can offer support, we may be able to identify a...
