Gap Analysis: Riordan Manufacturing

Riordan Manufacturing is an established global plastics producer which employs over 500 individuals with the projected annual earnings of $46 million. The company is a division of Riordan Industries, a Fortune 1000 enterprise. Like many large companies Riordan Manufacturing has several locations as their production is divided among three plants. Plant one located in Albany Georgia is responsible for producing plastic beverage containers. Plant two is located in Pontiac, Michigan and produces custom plastic parts. Plant three produces parts for plastic plants and is located in Hangzhou, China. The corporate office which houses research and development is located in San Jose, California.

Riordan maintains major accounts with the automotive parts industry, aircraft manufacturers, as well as the Department of Defense.

Other customers of note include beverage makers, beverage bottlers, and appliance manufacturers (University of Phoenix, 2007). Despite their diverse roster of clients, Riordan has experienced declining sales and uneven profits over the past two years. These deeply troubling events have encouraged the company to change its sales processes, and led them to take on a new Customer-Relationship Management System (CRM). Riordan has also made and proposed several key strategic changes in the way the company manufactures and markets products. One of these new changes is the implementation of sales teams, rather than single salespeople, with the goal of focusing on a particular customer segment. The sales team includes a sales person, a product engineering specialist and a customer service representative (University of Phoenix, 2007).
