Society changes in the late 1800's

In the late 1800's the United States were dealing with the aftermaths of the Civil War, and there were a lot of things that needed to be fixed in society. The ideals that were present before the war did not disappeared immediately after the war, it was needed the implementation of new laws and help of the nation as a whole. In fact, the war had many consequences in the country's economy and society, mainly in the South, and a reconstruction needed to happen but there were still many people in disagree. The war left the nation torn apart between the North and South, needless to say, there were still many social issues to be taken care of and changes were made. A period of reconstruction, change, improvement and discovery started.

Between 1865 and 1900, U.S. society experienced many events and changes; the three most important topics regarding changes in society were the emancipation, the "New South" philosophy and the Western frontiers.

The end of slavery came with the end of the war but it did not mean that the conflict between African American and white people was over and forgotten. As soon as all the Southern African American people were freed with the Thirteenth Amendment, they faced being surrounded by many angry and hostile white people. Most of the freed slaves remained in the Southern states and they had a really hard time trying to fit in as citizens; they struggled to start a new free life since most of them lost their family and their culture.
