Strengths and Weaknesses of Ireland's NHS

As you can see in any other National Health Systems there are several strengths and weaknesses, but taken into account the given amount of pages and the related amount of problems, I would like to discuss the in my opinion most significant topics of the Irish Health System.

Strengths

Local structures

As I outlined in my introduction, the principal executive agencies which deliver the actual health services are the regional health boards. These health boards have been responsible for regional health service distribution for more than three decades and because of that they are well experienced of target the required needs. The close touch to every community ensures that the services can be offered effectively.

Skilled workforce

Basically, Ireland's workforce has together with the British health service workforce a worldwide well known reputation for their high standard of knowledge and education.

Three factors have been responsible for a significant improvement in the health sector recently :

* The Health Services Employers Agency advises, support and provides industrial relations negotiation services to health service employers.

It has an important leadership role in developing human resource management policies for the effective management of people in the health system.

* The Office for Health Management was established to facilitate management development in the Irish health services. The Office seeks to achieve this through developing managers and promoting a positive managerial ethos throughout the health and personal social services.

* The establishment of the Health Services National Partnership Forum also underlines the role if staff at all levels has been extended beyond the basics of service delivery to finding solutions to shared concerns in the workplace.

Voluntary/statutory co-operation
